The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check is a quick assessment in England to see how well children can use phonics to read words. It's not a formal exam, but a way to identify if children need extra help with phonics. The check involves reading 40 words, some real and some "alien" or nonsense words, to test their decoding skills. The test takes place in June and the pass mark in previous years is 32.
